They are NOT like pregnancy tests in that even if you see a faint line, it's positive. My cycles have been off since stopping birthcontrol so I decided to use these each day of my cycle. For the whole month I had a faint test line and a dark control line. The day before the surge it was quite a bit darker than normal, but still not equal to or greater than the control line. The next day it was an OBVIOUS positive. The test line was much darker than the control line and showed up very quickly. Tried it again the next day and it was back to negative (which is what it is supposed to do.)There is a note that comes with the individually packaged strips that gives you a website to go to if you need more specific directions.
